About UNIT COMPANY

Who We Are

The name 'UNIT' was carefully chosen. It depicts the philosophy and reality of our company. The construction team – contractor, designers, owner, management, labor, and subcontractors - is merged into a cohesive, cooperative unit with a common goal, the timely completion of a first-rate product.

At UNIT, we love what we do and have built some amazing spaces for our clients. Originally formed in 1977 to perform design-build construction work for the Carr Gottstein Corporation, we have since grown into one of Alaska’s largest 100% Alaskan-Owned General Contractors offering a variety of construction services. Our growth and success are attributed to the belief in, and strict adherence to, the core values we established long ago:

INTEGRITY
We believe in mutual respect, listening to understand, and collaborating with others both internally and outside the company.
SAFETY & QUALITY
We endeavor to meet or exceed the unique requirements of the client and community with safety as our top priority.
ACCOUNTABILITY
We thrive when we work together, are honest, transparent, and follow through on our commitments. The success of every task, project, department, and of the company depends on everyone acting as a team.
INNOVATION
We strive every day to better our tools, our processes, and ourselves to build better. As our clients evolve, we pioneer new approaches to meet and anticipate their needs.
TEAMWORK
Our culture of teamwork allows us to work together, towards a common goal, with our clients, employees, vendors, and subcontractors to deliver better solutions and collectively accomplish our goals.
COMMUNICATION
The bedrock of all successful projects is open communication between the Project Team. The earlier the dialog between the Project Team Members begins the greater the benefits will accrue to the Project.
SERVICE
We go out of our way to advance our profession and improve people’s lives in the communities where we live and work. It is a privilege to help create a lasting and positive impact.

Safety

UNIT takes pride in putting the health and safety of people first. We always pre-plan our projects from a safety perspective to mitigate the potential for near misses, incidents, or injuries. Keeping employees, and others who may be present on site, safe is always a top priority. Our lead personnel regularly conduct safety meetings with field crews and subcontractors to perform job and/or task hazard analyses to ensure that our workforce is prepared, synchronized, and aware of what to expect. Our employees are supported by safety specialists, superintendents, and foremen who ensure sitewide project safety.

SAFETY IS JOB ONE: Our people are our most valuable asset, and safety is out greatest responsibility. Mandatory drug testing and safety training is required for all new employees on site. Safety classes are provided through our training department and specific courses must be completed to achieve certain craft worker classifications and certifications.

SAFETY PLANNING: Our Safety Manager prepares a site-specific Safety Plan for each jobsite and monitors the enforcement of all safety protocols during construction.

SAFETY MINUTE: At each jobsite we have a daily “safety minute” with each crew member. Supervisors integrate specific safety tips related to the day’s work, so workers are focused on the tasks at hand.

SAFETY CHECKLIST: A safety checklist is completed weekly by the project team on each jobsite.

Sustainability

UNIT is dedicated to green building.  Working closely with clients and design consultants gives us the greatest opportunity to ensure an environmentally responsible construction process and we understand the impact that our work has on the environment and the communities we work in.

We preserve project sites by strictly adhering to federal, state and local regulations and compliance requirements. We reduce energy usage by enhancing the efficiency of building systems and incorporating renewable energy sources. We prevent indoor air pollution with strategic material selection.

Our recent construction experience includes:

  • LEED gold and silver facilities
  • Five and Six-Star Energy Rated Facilities
  • Wind Turbines
  • Solar Energy
  • Living Buildings
