New Construction

Koliganek K-12 School

UNIT was selected to construct this rural school in February 2013. Located in Koliganek, Alaska the project included a new 17,900 square foot K-12 school, boiler building, water tank, and supporting site work and utilities. Other scopes included the demolition of the existing K-12 school, all related hazardous abatement, and the demolition or relocation of other existing site structures. The new school has a structural steel frame, concrete slab on grade, insulated wall/roof panels and have metal siding and roofing.

UNIT assembled a capable crew of local residents to construct the new school hiring 90% of local residents for our crew.

This   remote   project   required   close   coordination   with Subcontractors  and  Suppliers  in  order  to  meet  limited barge dates for materials, equipment etc. in order to begin construction in the Summer of 2014. UNIT successfully met all barge dates in Seattle and Anchorage and the barges headed North to the project site.  However, once the barges arrived in Dillingham, it was determined that due to a record lack of snow melt in the area, there was not enough water in the Nushagak river for the large barges to head up to Koliganek. Foreseeing this as a possible problem, UNIT had the freight dropped in Dillingham were we were able to contract with a separate barging company who utilizes smaller equipment. Even though more trips needed to be made up the river, having this back up plan in place saved the project from being delayed a year.

Being able to preserve the contract schedule saved both UNIT and the Client  time and money.
